INSTRUMENTAL ALBUM OF THE YEAR NOMINATION
|
Sierra Records' "Clarence White-33 Acoustic Guitar Instrumentals (Sierra Records SZCD 26023)"
release has just been nominated for "Instrumental Album of the Year" by International Bluegrass
Music Association (IBMA) for the year 2001.
The award winners will be announced on October 4, 2001 at the IBMA Awards Show at Kentucky Center
for the Arts, Louisville, KY.
White, who was killed by a drunk driver in July 1973, was a former member of the seminal bluegrass
group, the Kentucky Colonels and later was the lead guitarist in Rock & Roll Hall of Fame group, The
Byrds. Ironically, this is the first album ever devoted exclusively to his acoustic guitar playing.
This recording from early 1962 but only released this past year was produced by Sierra Records
founder, John Delgatto with Lawrence Dunlap. Clarence White's daughter, Michelle White Bledsoe,
served as executive producer.

GRAM PARSONS ANTHOLOGY 2 CD SET AVAILABLE NOW

MAIL................................................................................................
......................................
This new 46 song release is yet another anthology similar in scoop to the Australian Raven release
,
Warm Evening, Pale Mornings single CD of a few years ago. It features one new unreleased track,
“Knee Deep In The Blues,” for ISB Safe At Home album. There is also an alternate take of “Return of
The Grievous Angel” though it is listed as a remix. Instead it was originally mixed and released in
the early 80's as a 45 single. From the Grievous Angel album outtakes there is
"Sleepless Nights," “Brand New Heartache” and “The Angels Rejoiced In Heaven Last Night” that
previously were only available on the Flying Burrito Bros. Sleepless Nights album. The remaining 42
songs have been readily available on various releases spanning Gram’s career from the International
Submarine Band,
The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Bros., his two Warner Bros. Records solo albums to the original Sierra
live 1973 Fallen Angels album now on Rhino Records. Conspicuously missing are any tracks from
Early Years Shilos recordings. The two discs are packaged individually along with the expended 52
page booklet containing the usual photographs though some have been rarely seen. The album notes
are by the usual suspects and as such slightly incomplete and incorrect at times. Although this
effort still does not convey the complete story on how Gram moved from his folk days evolving into
the ground breaking fusion of rock and country with the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Bros. and
finally culminating with his brilliant two solo albums before his untimely death in 1973, this
admirable attempt further extends his legacy to hopefully a wider audience. But something tells me,
this will not be the last we will hear from this purveyor of what he liked to call, Cosmic American

CLARENCE'S MARTIN D-28
|
I was hoping not too many people would catch this error on the just released "Clarence White-33 Acoustic Guitar Instrumentals" CD package but Clarence's Martin D-28 Herringbone guitar was made in 1935, not 1942 as stated. It will be corrected on the next printing of the CD package.

NEWSLETTER - WINTER 2000
|
Ok, friends I am still here, are you still with me? First, some new releases to support the cause for better music! They include the last of the newly remastered Byrds albums just re-released by Sony/CBS Records along with a never before released “Live at the Fillmore” album. These releases use the latest in digital mastering with bonus/alternative tracks, expanded notes by Johnny Rogan and David Fricke plus track information. A special import box set will also be available shortly.
You will also find some rare, hard to find and difficult to obtain, CD imports.. It is very possible this could be your last chance to order these imported CDs, as once again they are scheduled to be deleted from the catalog of these labels soon.
The Clarence White Box Set and the live Gram Parsons recordings mentioned in the past are still only a dream. I have no idea when. However, there will be a new and different Clarence White and possibly a Gram Parsons project(s) in the works. Just keep buying those CDs and Videos from Sierra and it will happen. Regarding our distribution problem with the Disney Company Hollywood Records, a “settlement” if you can call it that was reached between us. They kept all the money they made from the distribution, returned all the unsold Sierra product they made (tens of thousands) and left me with unpaid bills. There is a simple solution out of this snafu--have everyone buy any or all of the Sierra released titles (CD 6000-6021 & 67011 ONLY - see Spring 1997 catalog or web site for list) at the super low price of only $8.00 each!
I would also like to get some feedback on a new situation. A number of commercial retail outlets want to sell a commercial version of the Gram and Clarence video (see other side-a few copies left). To those of you who already purchased this limited edition release, how would you feel if it was now more readily available? Obviously, the packaging would have to change to conform to the retail market but the video content would remain the same. There are still more permissions and royalties to be paid and that would continue if such a release were made. Let me know by mail, fax, or email your opinion.
There are two projects that I would like to get rolling: The placement of a memorial marker to Clarence White at the sight where he was killed in Palmdale, California. The area has been totally restored to a beautiful roadside park and such a marker would certainly be fitting. Second, the placement of a marble bench in honor of Gram Parsons close to the burial site of Clarence White at the Joshua Tree Memorial Cemetery Park in Lancaster, California where Gram bid his last farewell to his friend. More details later. Lastly, in the coming weeks, the Sierra web site will finally be updated on at least a monthly basis and you will be able to order directly from the secured site. However, if you still want and need a printed catalog with updates, those are still available for now. I am still fighting the good fight and with your support those musical buried treasures will become a reality.

SUMMER 1999
|
Another year or two has passed since Sierra Records has been active full time. I trust that those
of you who ordered the video "Together Again For The Last Time - Clarence White & Gram
Parsons" have appreciated this rare find. I have owned the rights to the video programs since
the early 80s and just wanted to share them with you and hopefully pay some bills in return.
If you cannot find the Emmylou Harris, Paul Kremen produced Gram Tribute CD "Return of the
Grievous Angel," it is available from Sierra Records Mail Order Catalog. And another piece of news that
I am not sure if you know about is that there are at least two more tribute albums to be prepared.
What other artist can claim this distinction, good or bad?
There are a number of questions from many of you that I will try to make an attempt to
answer. If I have forgotten something that will not be a surprised. So here goes! The last catalog
issued was the Spring 1997 catalog. This catalog is basically the same. However, there is a
current catalog insert available. It also lists CDs and cassettes that have been
deleted.
There are a number of releases that are sold out. There are no more copies anywhere in the
world and it is doubtful if they will ever appear again, some of them include the Desert Rose Band "Life
Goes On." Do not be surprised if the remaining Desert Rose Band albums on Curb Records will be deleted
in the future! The Kentucky Colonels "Appalachian Swing," unavailable for many months,
is finally back in stock. The Johnny Rogan book The Byrds-Timeless Flight Revisited was not available
to Sierra last year. It is back in print
and will hopefully be available soon from Sierra. Rhino Records has owned the rights to Gram
Parsons "The Early Years" Volume 1 & 2 since September 1996. Volume 1 was actually the previously
released on Sierra vinyl LP "The Early Years 1963-65" but Volume 2 was never released
in any form. Rhino has no plans for any of these releases as yet or ever. I hope
there will be be more news later about this. Sony/CBS will be releasing the remaining Byrds
albums in the extended form in the Spring 2000 and will be available from Sierra. The only currently known
footage of Gram performing live is on the video that is on the Sierra Home Video release. There
are a few more video clips of Gram/Byrds/Flying Burrito Bros. lip syncing to several songs, but
nothing live!
Sierra Records plan to release the much anticipated Clarence White box set "From Bakersfield to
Byrdland" got sidetrack by its last distributor (more on that below). It is still planned for
release in the future. There are possible future releases with Gram Parsons but nothing has been
projected for the future as yet. Thoughts of a GP & the Fallen Angels Live #2 as previously announced
has been suspended for now. Well, hopefully I answered just a few questions. Are there any more?
Regarding the above comment about the Clarence White Box set, I had signed a
manufacturing and distribution agreement for the Sierra Records catalog in the summer of 1997
with Hollywood Records, the Walt Disney Companys so called music label. The first three
months of the initial distribution (September - November 1997) were great, with a promise to
move forward on the Clarence set. Then the bottom fell out and Hollywood Records in effect put
the label on hold to the point of being out of business. This included the pre-mature return from all
retail outlets of all Sierra product before the 1997 Christmas selling season! Our agreement was
to last into the year 2000. My lawyers and I then struggled to resolve the matter.
When you are Big "Brother" or should I say "Mouse," the little guy comes last! A resolution, if you can
call it that, was worked out thought it really did not get me out of the hole they dug for me.
But at least I have the faint opportunity of starting anew. Lastly, this is just a one-person company now. It
has been that way since the first of last year as a result of all these problems. It has been over 25 years
since I started the company. Thank you for all the years of support and the mutual love we
have shared for the music.
A few regrets, but still warm regards,
John Delgatto
